Description

Original Press Engraving Galveston Texas Cotton 1858
Contemporary press cutting (probably from the French weekly
Le Monde Illustré
) shows a view of the port city of Galveston, Texas, in 1858, which served temporarily as the capital of the Texas Republic. Here, the bustling cotton export trade is featured. The removal and elimination of many Native Americans, particularly the Comanches, in the 1850s opened up new areas for cotton agriculture and led to an increase in cotton production from 58,073 bales in 1849 to 431,645 bales by 1859.
This is a contemporary original item, NOT/NOT a copy or later edition, and a valuable piece of Americana. Its condition is very good; 11.75 in x 9.5 in. Ready for framing, as a gift, or as an illustration in a publication or exhibit.
