Ballou's Pictorial Drawing-Room Companion416 pages - RARE - dated 1855
M.M. Ballou (Maturin Murray Ballou) 1820-1895 (publisher, editor) Boston, Mass.
Hardcover, containing a collection of Ballou's Pictorial Newspapers. A weekly publication from
January 6th, 1855 to June 30, 1855. A total of 416 pages.
Profusely illustrated with beautiful pictures, engravings and maps throughout.
There are articles and stories contained within that offer a treasure of historic information. One
particular article entitled: Running a Slave Cargo, an article on Revolutionary War relics.
Beautiful double page (center fold) of the ships of the U.S. Navy, pictures of Boston's Beacon St.
and Charleston, S.C. and many cities off the US and across the globe.
Maps of Cuba, Tennessee and numerous other places.
Classified section contains ads for furniture, medicine and P.T. Barnums American Museum, etc. etc.
The book does have some condition issues. the cover is loose, there are some creased or folded
pages, a few loose. There is some soiling and yellowing. Thers are 2 pages where the top corners
have been cut out but the spine is still in tact. All the pages appear to be here and everything is
easily readable.
The book could be repaired / restored. About good condition I would guess since this was published
and printed five years prior to the start of the Civil War.
I have seen single issues - 4 pages of Ballou's online for 0+ and pictures (engravings) and maps
for .00 to .00 and up.
So here is an opportunity to add 416 pages of history to your collection!
"Nothing like reading history on the day it was originally written"!
***There is a name plate on the front cover --- this volume must have belonged to Henry Card.
